Proposed Mobile Bay Ship Channel Widening:
Letter to Col. Jon Chytka

In November, the Alabama State Port Authority called a meeting to discuss their proposal to widen a portion of the Mobile Bay ship channel. The proposed project would create a passing lane in the lower portion of the bay, resulting in more rapid transition of ships into and out of the port, and the ability to handle more ships in the channel at one time.

On April 2, 2014, the DIPOA sent a letter to Col. Jon Chytka, Commander of the Mobile District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, requesting that the Corps perform an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) Supplement for the Corps project to widen a portion of the Mobile Bay Ship Channel.  The Corps had proposed to do an Environmental Assessment (EA), which is not as rigorous a study and does not require the same level of public involvement (public hearings, notifications, etc.) as the EA.

We are encouraging property owners to write to the Corps, to support the request for the EIS Supplement.

Grant Writing Committee

We are seeking someone to head up this committee, which will focus on writing proposals for Restore Act funds and other grants.  We will be submitting property enhancement proposals from both an environmental and economic perspective.  The committee head does not have to write proposals unless they so desire.  Their primary goal is to find people willing to write the grants, pro bono and other.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact us at office@dipoa.org.

Goin' Digital

Reminder - We are publishing all meeting agendas, minutes, financial reports, committee reports, etc. to the DIPOA website and/or online archives prior to the open meetings each month. If you wish to have a printed copy of the agenda or any other documents on hand for the meeting, please visit our website the day before the meeting to print out copies of whatever you like.
