Proposed Mobile Bay Ship Channel Widening:
Letter to Col. Jon Chytka
In November, the Alabama State Port Authority called a meeting to
discuss their proposal to widen a portion of the Mobile Bay ship
channel. The proposed project would create a passing lane in the lower
portion of the bay, resulting in more rapid transition of ships into and
out of the port, and the ability to handle more ships in the channel at
On April 2, 2014, the DIPOA sent a letter to Col. Jon
Chytka, Commander of the Mobile District of the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, requesting that the Corps perform an Environmental Impact
Study (EIS) Supplement for the Corps project to widen a portion of the
Mobile Bay Ship Channel. The Corps had proposed to do an
Environmental Assessment (EA), which is not as rigorous a study and does
not require the same level of public involvement (public hearings,
notifications, etc.) as the EA.
We are encouraging property owners to write to the
Corps, to support the request for the EIS Supplement.
