New Alabama Law Proposed for Shoreline Restoration
HB386 is a bill which was submitted to the Alabama State Legislature by
Representative David Sessions of Mobile (105th District) in January
2014. The bill proposes that beach-quality sand from nearby inlet
dredging (such as the dredging of the ship channel in Mobile Bay and the
Outer Bar Channel) be deposited on adjacent eroding beaches such as
Dauphin Island, to help replenish the deficit of sand caused by the
dredging. The bill was initially proposed to Rep. Sessions by the
DIPOA Board of Directors of 2013-2014. To read more about the
bill, click here: HB386
Proposed Mobile Bay Ship Channel Widening
In November, the Alabama State Port Authority called a meeting to
discuss their proposal to widen a portion of the Mobile Bay ship
channel. The proposed project would create a passing lane in the lower
portion of the bay, resulting in more rapid transition of ships into and
out of the port, and the ability to handle more ships in the channel at
one time. For more information,
